The City of Sanford has been declared to have Community Spread of COVID-19 by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), has an infection rate 4 times higher than the State average, and recently our School Status was reduced from a favorable Green to a higher caution Yellow. In recognition of these statistics, the City Council enacted an Emergency Ordinance – An Act to Alleviate Community Spread of COVID-19 on September 10, 2020.
Individuals and Businesses were already required to utilize Face Coverings as strengthened within the City’s Ordinance now with the following changes;
1. Face Coverings were updated to include disposable and not just cloth and they must be properly worn over the nose and mouth.
2. Retail stores over and under 50,000 sq. ft. must also make customers aware of and not allow entry if not wearing a Face Covering. Prior State exemptions remain.
3. There is now a Local Penalty of a Warning and then a $100.00 civil fine for subsequent offenses by an Individual or Business. This is in lieu of the State granted authority to issue a citation of a Class E Crime and up to a $10,000 fine for noncompliance.
